Spring Lawn Care Tips on Preparing Your Mower for the Season Ahead

ZANESVILLE, OH – Spring is in the air as many people prepare to cut their lawns for the first time this year.

Ryan Dodson, the President of American Pride Power Equipment, said the first thing you should do before your first mow of the season is to pick up any large sticks or rocks that have found their way into your yard. He said removing the debris will help with the longevity of the blades on your lawn mower.

Dodson also talked about what maintenance you should be doing to keep your mower going.

“Lawn mower wise, since there’s a lot of moisture, especially right now with all the recent rains on the ground,” Dodson said. “It’s good to have a good, sharp set of blades on the mower. Also clean out from under the deck frequently because that will get you a better cut and disperse from the clippings on your mower.”

Dodson said it’s important to check the fuel level and battery life on your mower before you start on any lawn. He also said, depending on how frequently you cut your grass, to sharpen the blades on your mower at least a few times during the season.

“And if you do pick up the sticks [with the blades],” Dodson said. “But usually a couple of times in season, after spring, because the moisture will dull the blades. Then again maybe right before leaf season to get a good chopping up of the leaves.”

Dodson said by sticking to a maintenance routine with your lawn mower can save you time and repair costs during grass cutting season.
