New State Funding Formula for Colleges

State funding for Ohio’s two and four year colleges are now tied 100% to graduation rates and course completion.

The Inter-University Council of Ohio collaborated with the Ohio Association of Community Colleges to create the new framework for the funding. Dr. Paul Brown, President of Zane State College, worked on the new distribution plan and feels that it will transform the education system in Ohio.

"This last year we went to 100% percent funding based on performance measures," Said Dr. Brown "So, based on success points. 25% on success points, 25% on certificates and other professional credentials and 50% on course and degree completion. "

Dr. Brown says that by placing the focus on academic achievements of students it will encourage universities and colleges to focus more on helping students prepare for success and the next phases of life, either furthering their education or setting them up for quality jobs..

"I’m proud to be part of Ohio because I think Ohio is taking a leadership role nationally in this initiative. We are one of the few states that are 100% funded based on performance."

The new funding system that was activated in July also gives veterans opportunities to receive college credit for military training and experience as well as streamlines the state’s system of college credit courses for high school students.
