South Zanesville United Methodist Church Scrap Metal Drive

The South Zanesville United Methodist Church Emergency Food Pantry is holding a fundraiser.

The Scrap Metal Drive runs through the end of January, all proceeds will go towards food for the pantry. Conrad Wilkins, Chairman of the Scrap Metal Drive says that its pretty easy to participate. Simply take any excess scrap metal down to Muskingum Iron and Metal and tell them you are there for the drive. The church will get credit for the weight and you will get a receipt for tax purposes. Wilkins says that the number of clients the food pantry serves is rising, but funding for the pantry is dropping, and every little bit helps keep families fed.

"Right now its very hard for us to purchase items such as canned vegetables and so forth. So, we hope to be able to do some of that. It sounds pretty simple but it does make a big deal when these families come in and need help."

The food pantry aims to provide 3 meals a day for 3 days for each person in a family. And in 2013 the pantry provided 58,554 meals and they are projected to serve over 60,000 for 2014. Becky Hannold told us that with the help of the the food pantry, her families budget is able to go a little bit further.

"With 5 people there eating, obviously, you want to make sure they have enough. And sometimes it makes a difference weather you have enough grocery money, or getting the car fixed or medicine. You know, there’s just not always enough to go around. "

If you are unable to participate in the scrap metal drive, donations to the food pantry are gladly accepted, just bring them to the church Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 9:00a.m. and noon.
