Adams Lane Bridge Replacement Bids Heard

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Muskingum County is fortunate to have received the government funding necessary for replacing many of its weakest bridges.

Muskingum County Engineer’s Office Project Manager Shawn Johnson presented bids to the Muskingum County commissioners from three companies to replace the Joe’s Run bridge on Adams Lane.

“A couple of years ago we were fortunate enough to get seven bridges funded out of the infrastructure bill,” Johnson said. “This is the last of the seven bridges for those two years. So this bridge took a little bit longer to get ready and put it out for bid because of some right-of-way acquisitions that was needed. So we’re finally able to get all that done and get it out for bid.”

The estimated cost for the bridge replacement was $325,000 and the lowest bid was from Shelly and Sands for just over $288,000. Johnson explained why the commissioners placed the bidding under advisement.

“So typically when you have a bid, you have several pay items,” Johnson said. “You put down a unit price for each pay item and then depending on your quantities, you multiply those and then you end up with a total bid amount. Sometimes there’s mathematic errors, so our job is to go back, do a bid analysis, double check all the numbers, make sure everything’s right and make sure that total bid price is accurate. And then we can award the low bidder after that.”

A meeting with the company who will be awarded the project will be set to discuss their work load and construction scheduling. The replacement of the steel-beam bridge with a reinforced-concrete-slab bridge is required to be completed within 90-days, sometime before November.
