Southgate Parkway Bridge Reopens in Cambridge
CAMBRIDGE, OH – The Southgate Parkway Bridge in Cambridge is officially reopened following extensive renovations that began in December of 2022.
The bridge had been closed to the traveling public since June of last year, leading to a much-anticipated reopening. To celebrate the completion of the project, an opening ceremony took place that featured a presentation by the Ohio Department of Transportation, a lively performance by the Cambridge City Band, and a variety of food trucks.
“We’re having a really big day; we’re opening the bridge to the main heart of our town. It’s been out for over a year, and it got done six to seven months earlier than anticipated. Everyone who comes to Cambridge, Southgate Bridge is the main way. It’s huge. The original bridge was built in ’67, and it’s served us for quite a while,” Cambridge Mayor Tom Orr said.
The bridge’s reopening is expected to improve local traffic conditions and safety for pedestrians. The community can now look forward to a more efficient transportation route as daily routines resume normalcy.
“The vandal-protection fence was a big addition. We also widened the sidewalk from six feet to eight feet to make it a little safer for pedestrians. The majority of the bridge followed the original design. We also tried to mimic the Dewey Avenue bridge,” Transportation Engineer Cheyann Moore said.
