Toy Related Injuries
Christmas is just four short weeks away, and with it comes the risk of toy related injury.
A new study released by Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that every three minutes, a child in the United States is treated for a toy related injury. David Davis, R.N. and the Director of the Emergency and Trauma Services at Genesis gave us an overview of what the U.S. product safety site says to watch out for.
"There’s been an increase also in two main injuries which is toy chests that little kids put their heads in and the toy chest comes and bumps them on the head. And also continuing concerns about the little flat batteries that look like a nickel that are very toxic."
Davis told us the most common toy injuries are related to foot powered scooters, while skateboard injuries have decreased. Davis shared some tips with us to prevent any play related injuries.
"Read the labels, make sure that it’s age appropriate and be aware of your surroundings so you don’t get sliding down a hill at 90 miles an hour and not be able to get stopped."
Davis encourages you to complete a google search on toy related injuries, in order to educate yourself in avoiding them. If your child has an accident while playing, you are encouraged to seek medical treatment immediately.
