Settling the Holiday Blues
As we’re into December now people are gearing up for the upcoming holidays.
While it is a time of celebration for many people, for others it brings on bouts of depression. We spoke with the Executive Director of Muskingum County Behavioral Health, Steve Carrel, about the holiday blues. He said people can struggle with substance abuse during this time and he recommends to set reasonable expectations for the season.
People need to have reasonable expectations for this time of year. So you can’t afford to buy the $1,000 gaming system for your kids," said Carrel. "Ok, that’s life. Set reasonable expectations, set reasonable budgets, you know, I can afford this much or I can only go to these two or three parties instead of trying to hit 20."
While holiday shopping can be a problem Carrel said being around alcohol and other temptations cause many people to relapse.
"Excessive alcohol use can lead to to depression because of the chemistry of the brain," said Carrel. "Then a person starts self-medicating, well if I’m depressed and alcohol can make me feel happy, happier then I’ll use some more. And ultimately that is going to get them in trouble."
Carrel said if you are feeling down you can always call the Six County Crisis Hotline for support.
