Muskingum County Student Receives $40,000 Scholarship

ZANESVILLE, OH – A recent graduate of John Glenn High School in Muskingum County was awarded a $40,000 scholarship to continue his education. Ashton Driggs was awarded the Fred F. and Herman M. Dreier Foundation Scholarship to pursue an electrical engineering degree at West Virginia University.

“I was actually at work and my friends texted me. They were like ‘dude you just won $40,000’ and I was like ‘uh, are you sure? Like, is this a joke?’ but I found out it was real. I was like shaking the whole day, like, I couldn’t believe it but then I got home and was celebrating with my parents and it was just a great feeling. It’s absolutely amazing, still, that this happened so I’m just super thankful,” Driggs said.

The scholarship selects students on academic potential, high moral character, and financial need and focuses on students pursuing engineering, medical, veterinary science, or agricultural degrees. The family representative of the scholarship, Kurt Dreier also placed an emphasis on the family to family aspect of the award.

“Really the whole focus of this scholarship really came from Fred and Herman who was really concerned about youth in this community in just Muskingum County and it wasn’t a big corporation. They were just regular guys. They worked sheet metal with George Frueh Company and they weren’t looking for tax write-offs. They were just looking to truly help a family and so I really just kind of focus on this is a family giving to another family,” Dreier said.
