Big Brothers Big Sisters Celebrating National Mentoring Month
January is National Mentoring Month, and Big Brothers Big Sisters is in need of volunteers.
Executive Director Mollie Crooks, says mentoring gives Big Brothers and Sisters the chance to feel like a kid again when working with their Little. Crooks told us they will take as many volunteers as they can get.
“I would be very happy to have one but we have 70 children on our waiting list, so over the next several months, can find mentors to work with those children, that would be awesome.”
There are two different match opportunities. One is community-based where the Big and Little pick activities together. The other is school based, and the big will meet with the little at an elementary school with planned activities. Crooks says mentoring allows you to help shape a child’s life.
“Mentors are very important in children’s lives so regardless of whether there’s one or two parents are in the home, what the family structure is, what the educational background is. Every child out there can benefit from having positive role models in their lives in addition to family members….kids do better in school, they’re less likely to get involved in risky behaviors. More likely to go to college, and have career job training.”
