Long-Time Reds First Baseman Joey Votto Hangs Up His Cleats

CINCINNATI, OH
“That’s it. I’m done. I am officially retired from baseball.”
Long-time Reds first baseman Joey Votto announced his retirement Wednesday evening on social media, following a 17-year career. Votto only ever suited up in the major leagues for the Reds, and certainly made his mark there once being called up in 2007.
He was a six-time all-star, a “Hank Aaron Award” winner, a “Gold Glove” winner in 2011, and of course the tremendous year in 2010, landing him a “Most Valuable Player” award in the National League.
Votto finished his career with 356 home runs and is also a member of the 2,000 career hits club. He was well regarded as one of the great characters in the game, as well as a clubhouse favorite in Cincinnati throughout his career.
After going separate ways with the Reds after last season, Votto had been playing for the Blue Jays Triple A-affiliate Buffalo over 31 games this year, before hanging up his cleats.
It’s only a matter of time now until we see his number 19 immortalized at Great American Ball Park, as well as Cooperstown in five years’ time in the Hall of Fame.
