Maysville Celebrates New School-Based Health Center
ZANESVILLE, OH – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik made a special visit in Zanesville Wednesday morning.
They celebrated the opening of the Maysville Local School District’s new school-based health center, funded by the Appalachian Children’s Health Initiative. This center is part of the DeWine-Husted Administration’s efforts to expand healthcare access in Appalachian schools.
“Schools are a place that we trust. This is where we go for basketball games, we go to student teacher conferences. This is the heart of the community, and that’s why putting a health center directly into the school will make so much sense. It’s some place that parents really feel comfortable about. This is going to really make it easier for our parents to get health care for their kids. They’re not going to have to take time off, take their child out of school, or go someplace. They’re going to be able to get a lot of that care right here,” Ohio Governor, Mike DeWine said.
The center is designed to provide essential medical services to students, including dental, physical health care, and behavioral health support — all on the school grounds.
“It makes access a lot easier. The students, when they’re here, they have access to it. If there’s anything going on at home, that also enables us to reach out at home and try to bridge that gap and make the services even easier to obtain than they have in the past,” Maysville Superintendent, Brian Blum said.
The Maysville health center is the first of 16 centers to be placed through the Appalachian counties.
