Commissioners Address Concerns About New County Jail
ZANESVILLE, OH – A new county jail is set to be built on the former Mosaic Tile Plant site in Zanesville, a move county officials say is much needed for Muskingum County.
Located on Pershing Road, this site has been chosen for its suitability to house the new facility. Muskingum County Commissioner Cindy Cameron, noted that the new jail will meet all requirements and provide much-needed upgrades for both staff and inmates. Unlike traditional facilities, the new building will not feature a barbed wire fence, ensuring a more modern and community-friendly appearance while maintaining security.
“The commissioners feel that when people see this building, it doesn’t scream that it’s a jail. There is not a barbed wire. You know, when you picture a jail, there’s a fence with barbed wire. There will not be any of that at this site. It will follow all the rules of the Historical Preservation Board that the city has. It has to meet certain requirements, color, size, and the landscaping. All of that will be followed. I think once people see it, they’re going to understand that it’s not a hindrance to that area, and that it’s not going to jeopardize anybody’s safety,” Cameron said.
Construction will begin in the spring and is expected to take around 18 months. Some residents have expressed concerns about possible soil contamination at the site, but these worries have been put to rest. Commissioner Cameron confirmed that the EPA has not deemed the location hazardous.
“That site can be developed with engineering controls. Everyone that’s been involved with this project, everyone is following the guidelines that’s been given by the EPA. That’s one of the number one things. It has not been deemed hazardous by the EPA. We want what is best. We would not jeopardize anybody, or any building being built there until we follow everything,” Cameron said.
In addition to improved facilities, the new county jail will offer mental health and addiction services to those in custody.
