Potential Black Ice Monday Morning
Despite the majority of the snow moving to our north ODOT still prepared for the worst.
Nineteen ODOT trucks spread across the area last night to pre-treat roadways. ODOT’S manager for Muskingum County, Phil Valentine, shares his thoughts on the preparations.
"You know, obviously the low pressure pushed up north so we didn’t get as bad of a storm as we expected. But we were prepared for it, we came in shortly after midnight and we ran through the night. I thought we did a good job of keeping up with everything."
According to Valentine we may not have seen the worst of the storm just yet. Due to lowering temperatures and rain there is a high possibility for black ice, and because of the rain pre-treatment measures may not work.
"One thought that we have tonight with this warm up, it’s probably going to warm up past midnight, but before the morning commute it’s expected that temperatures are going to drastically fall back possibly down to 20 degrees, we’ll have to see how it progresses but with the rain coming it’s going to wash off any salt residue that we have so any pre-treat measure that we take isn’t going to matter because it’s going to wash off. So when that temperature does drop there is a high potential for some refreeze on the roads."
During your commute to work in the morning the best way to stay safe is to drive slow. Black ice is difficult to see and driving slowly could potentially save your life.
