Delay in Testing Relieves Local School

Yet another frigid day has caused schools to cancel school once again.

While usually that would just mean another make up day, closings last week and this week mean a delay in state testing. The state board of education announced this week that schools can have extra days to complete the testing. Halle Randles at Zanesville City Schools said this will help the students.

“On the other hand, you have calamity days and it’s harder to make it up.,” Randles said. “And we’ve really appreciated that the Ohio department of education has come through and said hey, when you’ve had snow days, whatever you’ve missed, you can use those to extend your testing, so again it benefits the students.”

Schools can postpone their tests as many days as they cancel during the state testing period. Randles said this testing procedure will allow Zanesville to keep the tests separate instead of making young students take 3 and a half hour long tests.

“One thing about PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) is that they’ve divided the reading portion into three separate tests, short tests and the math into two,” Randles said. “It really helps with that attention span.”

Zanesville plans to resume testing as soon as they are back in session. Randle said the district still has eight of the ten tests to complete.
