Community Members Collecting Holiday Gifts for Area Seniors
ZANESVILLE, OH – A group of people are coming together to make sure seniors in our area have a Merry Christmas.
About 8 years ago, Jamie Crozier said her grandmother passed away and she didn’t have any other grandparents to shop for during the holidays. She said through her 16 years as an EMT, she has seen how lonely some elderly people can be in nursing homes and hospitals.
Crozier said this prompted her and a few of her close friends to start ‘adopting’ seniors and shopping for their Christmas wish lists.
“I had went on a call to a nursing home and the gentleman didn’t have any family,” Crozier explained. “And he told me that he just wanted a good cup of coffee and I was like ‘there are so many people in the nursing homes that don’t have any family to bring them anything. So I had an idea to adopt a few people in the nursing home that didn’t have families and I had told my coworkers and we put it on social media and it kind of just blew up.”
Crozier said this year they have adopted over 100 seniors to shop for from Willow Haven Healthcare and Rehabilitation and Love and Joy in Dresden.
They will be taking donations of needed items like body wash, shampoo, snacks, and drinks until Dec. 13th. Crozier just hopes that all of the seniors that have been adopted through this program feel loved this Christmas
“It’s so heartwarming, when you turn on the news sometimes, it’s all doom and gloom,” Crozier said. “Doing this, it just shows you there’s so much good and humanity. People want to help, if you give them a reason, and, like I said, we had them all adopted within 3 days and my phone is still ringing for people wanting to adopt.”
