41st Zanesville Spectacular
Dancers filled Winland Memorial Gymnasium Sunday as students competed in the Zanesville Spectacular.
Several teams were able to brave the snow to compete in the school’s annual dance competition. The event has been postponed a few times due to weather, but Wayne Carpenter, the Director of the Zanesville High School Devilettes said they were finally able to have the competition.
“Today is our third attempt at competition this year. We’ve hosted this competition for over 40 years and we open it up to teams from throughout the area especially South-Eastern, Eastern, and Central Ohio, and many times we have 40-50 performers on the floor.”
This year the number of performers was slightly smaller due to the change in dates, but the crowd was just as enthused as ever to cheer on the dancers. According to Carpenter the dancers spend all year getting ready for this competition.
“They mainly prepare all year long, many of them have performed at basketball games, or football with their bands or their schools. They prepare throughout the whole season, and some of the contests this time of year are generally the end of their season. So we hated to disappoint people by not having it, and it’s turning out very well for those who got here.”
The yearly competition helps raise money for the Devilettes to purchase uniforms and props.
