Staying Fit and Eating Right

With warmer weather on the horizon, your workout routine may be getting a reboot as well.

Registered Dietitian, Julie Nash, said that fits perfectly with March being National Nutrition Month. The theme this year attempts to show the message of combining healthy eating and the right amount of exercise to achieve a healthy lifestyle.

“This year’s theme is bite into a healthy lifestyle and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics wants us to focus on eating less calories overall,” Nash said. “Half your plate should be fruits and vegetables.”

Nash said getting up and moving your body is as important as healthy eating and recommends between 150 to 420 minutes of exercise a week. The exact recommended amount varies by individual health goals.

“We’re focusing on not only a healthy weight, but a higher quality life, preventing chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke and certain forms of cancer have been found to be associated with diet and activity level,” Nash said.

The health department doesn’t just want people to make just a day of healthy living. But Nash said the goal of the month is to encourage people to make slow and steady changes to give themselves an overal healthier lifestyle.
