Building Update at the Center for Seniors

The Muskingum County Center for Seniors remains closed Thursday after a serious roof problem.

It closed last week after the roof began leaking, and the search continues for a temporary home for the center. Muskingum County Commissioner, Jim Porter, says it’s still an ongoing process.

“The staff has been working non-stop to find another location suitable,” Porter said. “They’ve run into multiple hurdles everywhere they go.”

Repairs on the center are estimated to be finished in the next 15 to 30 days. Porter said it doesn’t make the most sense to move if they’re going to be able to move back in in a few weeks. But negotiations are ongoing to see if they are locked into a contract with the building’s owner.

“We’re currently looking into whether we are bound by a contract that we have signed with that group that owns the facility,” Porter said. “If that’s true and we can’t break that contract then I’m assuming that we’ll go back out there.”

The county plans to build a new center, but a levy on the May 5 ballot needs to pass to make construction of a new facility possible.
