Preparing For Possible Failure of Dam
A report warning of potential catastrophic failure at Buckeye Lake Dam is being analyzed by state engineers while officials plan more discussions about how they’d respond to such an emergency. State and local emergency response officials were among roughly 50 people who gathered Monday to discuss the faulty 180-year-old earthen dam at Buckeye Lake. A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers report released last week said officials should immediately replace the dam or drain the lake. The report said a dam failure could endanger the lives of 3,000 people who live and work nearby. State engineers are evaluating the report. Meanwhile, the Ohio Emergency Management Agency will plan exercises where agencies can talk through their plans for responding if the dam fails.
