Zanesville Continues to Deal with Potholes

Zanesville road crews continue work to clean up after winter wreaked havoc on the city’s roads.

The Zanesville Public Service Committee met Tuesday morning to receive an update on various projects the Public Services Department is working on.

One of those on going projects is the filling of potholes around the city. It is a project the city must undergo each year. Right now there are seven crews working to fix the problem.

“There was so much demand on our main routes that the crews we have available in the street division could only get so many,” said Public Services Director, Jay Bennett. “We’ve inserted other staff with it to be able to reach out into more of the neighborhoods.”

Crews have been taken from other departments. It’s the continual plan that the city has to put staff where help is needed the most. Bennett also said the department is figuring out new ways to get a better fix to the pothole problem.

“We’re going to spend a ton of money on asphalt in neighborhoods, on main routes,” said Bennett. “Well then next year we need to come back out and seal that investment so that water doesn’t intrude and then freeze all happen. It extends the life of the pavement long term exponentially.”

Until asphalt plants fire up for the season, the city is using a cold patch that provides short term relief to potholes. However, once plants open up, warm mixes will be used to give a more permanent fix.
