Driver Heads Wrong Way on I-70

For the second time in three weeks a driver made way onto the wrong side of Interstate 70 in Zanesville.

Around 7:45 Wednesday morning the Zanesville Police Department received numerous calls reporting that an elderly man was heading east in the westbound lanes of I-70.

According to the ZPD the driver entered the interstate on the Maple Avenue off ramp. Captain Tony Coury said the driver was able to turn himself around and headed the right direction and officers were not able to find him.

“No plate numbers were given to us, so we weren’t able to even catch up with the guy,” Coury said. “We reported it to the [Ohio State Patrol] and sent our own officers up to look, but by the time we got an officer in the area, he was already gone.”

Even though all exits and on ramps are marked with “wrong way” and “do not enter” signs, Coury said this can happen when drivers are confused or under the influence. He recommended being cautious while on the roads.

“It could have very well ended in a terrible crash up there and ruin someone’s day or taken a life, but we encourage people to get out there and pay attention to what you’re doing, slow down, make sure you’re getting on the right on-ramp and not getting on an off-ramp,” Coury said.

He added that it’s remarkable that no one was injured as usually the interstate is very busy during the time of the incident.
