Winning money for prom by avoiding drunk driving
A junior at Tri-Valley High School got a surprise which will help get some nice music at her prom.
Kapri Albertson went to Colony Square Mall during the Community Health Fair in search of earrings. While there, she participated in the distracted driving simulator and signed a promise letter to not drink and drive for a chance to win money for a DJ.
“They put my name in a drawing, and I kind of forgot about it, like I thought it was just a thing at the mall,” Albertson said. “Then my principal called me in and said you won money for our school for prom, and it took me a minute to remember, and I was like yeah I did sign that.”
Because Albertson won the drawing, Tri-Valley will receive $250 toward hiring a DJ for this year’s prom.
The gift is made possible by BrainSong. The organization aims to both teach people the dangers of and prevent drinking and driving. Micah Jones started BrainSong after suffering a traumatic brain injury after being hit by a drunk driver.
“Music’s really important to me, and I think it helps a lot to overcome, go through recovery as a survivor, and I know that with prom coming up, I think it was a big incentive to sign the promise to not drink and drive,” Jones said.
She believes using music as a teaching tool allows her message to reach more people because they won’t think of the talk as just another boring lecture.
