Presidents Day Political Rally

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Freedom of speech was alive and well today in downtown Zanesville as a group gathered to protest the way the current Executive Branch is handling the government.

Muskingum County Women’s Democratic Club Member Martha Sullivan shared her concern regarding the Trump Administration’s decisions to cut government departments and their workforces.

“We’re here because there is a national rally on Presidents Day,” Sullivan said. “And it’s supposed to take place in every state capital, any subdivision of a state, like a county seat. And we are trying to get people to come out and express their feelings about what’s going on in our country right now. And you know locally, we need to be united. We need to be able to speak to each other and understand what’s going on.”

Sullivan expressed gratitude toward a nation that allows its citizens to peacefully express their opinions but is concerned about the nation’s stability because of swift reforms that are being carried out by the recently installed Trump administration.

“Well, it affects us. Affects every single person,” Sullivan said. “My nephew was 24 years in the Army, he got out last June. He found a government job at John Glenn airport, he worked in one of the towers. Friday night he was fired because he had not been there a year and everyone who had not been there a year was fired. No matter who they were or what their background were.”

Sullivan added that her nephew had relocated his family back home to Ohio and that her nephew’s wife was facing the same scenario by recently being hired into the Department of Defense.
