ZANESVILLE, Ohio–Prepare for a summer spent cruising along the Muskingum River as supporters have donated more than $33,000 to kick off the riverboat’s next season.
The Lorena Sternwheeler offers public and private cruises through the waterways of the Muskingum River, taking its passengers on a boat ride back in time.
Zanesville Mayor Don Mason said, “In the 1970s the Chamber of Commerce thought it would be a great idea to increase travel and tourism to our area by having a sternwheeler boat on the river. The river was used a lot more for recreational purposes than now and a lot of that might have been due to private houseboats along the Muskingum River.”
Now, the Lorena is coming back for the summer at affordable prices for families thanks to donations from local residents and sponsors. Senior citizens will get to ride at no charge this summer due to donations from the Arlin and Jean Frame Charitable Fund through the Muskingum County Community Foundation.
“I really need to thank David Frame and his parents’ charitable fund, it is called the Arlin and Jean Frame Charity, because they have donated enough money to really pay for a lot of senior citizens to attend,” Mason said. “So again, we’re encouraging people [to come out] once the weather warms up, which will be any day now, we’ll have spring to venture down to Zane’s Landing where the Lorena rides.”
