The Nelson T. Gant House is Open for Tours

An historic site for the National Underground Railroad opened it’s doors for tours today.

After 15 long years of hard work and remodeling, the Nelson T. Gant house is now open for tours. We talked to the Educational Chair Person, Dr. Anita Jackson who acts out the role of Anna Maria the wife of Nelson T. Gant said it’s important to know the history behind this house.

"It’s a story of about an African American person who became very successful. There are a lot of stories in this area that sometimes don’t get told. We want the Gant House, the Gant Museum to be a place where people can come and learn about the stories that often do not get told," said Dr. Anita Jackson, Educational Chair Person, Nelson T. Gant Foundation.

Dr. Jackson said it’s been a long but rewarding road. In fact, when the the Nelson T. Gant Foundation took out the mortgage in 2002, the bank told them if they could pay it off in a year they would take off $25,000 dollars off the cost of the house And they did just that.

"We made that deadline by a year but, minus three weeks and we were very proud that we were able to meet that deadline," said Dr. Jackson.

Dr. Jackson said next they look forward to putting more displays and pictures to add to the visitors experience.
