Founder of Donald’s Donuts Dies

The founder of Donald’s Donuts has died.  Donald Warne Sr. ran the very popular Zanesville business from 1960 to 2007.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman and former state champion long bow archer in North Carolina.  He was a license pilot and also had his helicopter license. Warne started working in a bakery with his family in Asheville, North Carolina. The first Donald’s Donuts started in 1960 in Cherokee, North Carolina and then moved to Pine Street in 1960.  After several other moves, in 1984 Warne ended up in the current location at 2622 Maple Avenue.  Following his retirement from the donut shop, it was sold to his son Tom Warne and nephew Jon Gaylord, ensuring that the company would stay in the family.  The Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.  Calling hours are Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral which will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.  Warne will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery in Sonora. He was 82-years-old.
