Time to Begin Planting those Cold Weather Vegetables.
The warmer temperatures are making it feel like summer and also has area residents wanting to dig into their gardens.
While it may be to early for most plants it is time to plant cold weather vegetables. Marvin Paul works at Paul’s Farm Market and Greenhouses and said having consecutive nice days is the key.
“Usually by the first of April you should be able to put those crops in. Some of them you can maybe put in a little bite earlier. But, you just have to watch and maybe have to cover them. Especially if you have them coming directly out of the greenhouse it’s a set temperature and you outside,” said Paul.
Examples of cold weather plants are lettuce, radishes, onions, carrots, spinach, cabbage, and broccoli, to name a few. Paul said the best way to acclimate your plants is to make sure you pick the sunniest area in your yard to plant.
“Take the shade out, you want as much sun as you can in your garden. I know some people, wherever they need to put it, whether it be a yard or plot, they may get some shading because the trees or from the house. But, as sunny of a sight that they could get will be the best,” said Paul.
Paul encourages home gardeners to keep an eye on your garden and remember to and rotate your crops, especially tomatoes, yearly.
