Remembering Don Matthews: A Voice That Shaped Zanesville Radio

ZANESVILLE, OH – A familiar voice that once filled Zanesville’s airwaves has passed away. Don Matthews, a beloved WHIZ radio personality, has died at the age of 86.

Don spent more than four decades behind the mic at WHIZ, serving many roles, from on-air talent to program director, before retiring in 2002. His professionalism, passion for radio, and love for the community could be heard in every broadcast.

“I got to watch his professionalism, in the way he carried himself, from the way he produced his show. He did such a great job. He was fast with his wits; he would give a joke and would take a joke. He was just a great person, a gentle soul that really was able to connect with his audience and was able to teach a young guy like me at the time, how to be a professional broadcaster,” Former WHIZ Personality Brian Wagner said.

Don’s presence reached far beyond the microphone. His impact wasn’t just felt by those who worked alongside him, but by thousands who tuned in to the radio every day.

“He really was a companion to the people who listened to the radio back then. People thought of him as someone who was a part of their family because he was in their homes, he was in their cars, he was a familiar voice,” WHIZ General Manager Jay Benson said. “He’s going to be greatly missed, and he’ll always have a place in our hearts here at WHIZ.”

Calling hours for Don Matthews will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, August 1st at DeLong-Baker & Lanning Funeral Home. Services will begin at 1 o’clock, followed by burial at St. Paul Cemetery in Zanesville.
