SOUTH ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Each September 11th, the Newton Township Fire Department invites first responders from across the county to participate in a memorial march.

Fallen First Responder Walk Founder Chas Cosgrave explained the reason for the 9th annual event and expressed his appreciation for how the public genuinely supports their local first responders.

“This is the 9th annual Fallen First Responders Walk this year.” Cosgrave said. “It’s an annual event. Just as a sign of remembrance to not only the first responders that we lost on 9-11 but all public safety that we’ve lost, as a sign of remembrance to those that have come before and as a way to build unity in our public safety community today.”

The 3.43 mile hike began at the Newton Township Fire Department and followed U.S. Route 22 to the South Zanesville Wal-Mart parking lot. Many commuters and onlookers demonstrated their appreciation for the cause along the way.

“I don’t think that our public safety community, especially here in Muskingum County, is ever in… ever been in any danger of losing sight of the fact that our community is very supportive of them,” Cosgrave said. “But it is very nice to have that reminder. You know, people blowing their horns, holding up signs and things of that nature. You know we’ve had people pull over and salute the route over the years.”

Cosgrave invites the public, who couldn’t make it to this year’s event, to visit the Fallen First Responder Walk Facebook page.
