Health Officials Urge Flu Shots as Cases Climb

ZANESVILLE, OH – Flu season is in full swing, sending thousands of local patients to the doctor and putting hundreds in the hospital. Many of those cases could’ve been prevented with a flu shot.

Health experts say flu symptoms can range from headaches and sore throats to fever and fatigue. Cases are expected to rise as colder weather settles in, and more people spend time indoors. Doctors encourage everyone to get their annual flu vaccine to stay protected, not just for themselves, but for their loved ones too.

“We are in flu season and we’re starting to see cases increase. It’s been going on since late August or early September. That’s a little bit earlier than what we’re used to seeing. We’re seeing cases of influenza A and influenza B. Both are in the communities right now and we expect that they are going to continue to rise.” Kevin D. Frank, M.D, FAAFP, Medical Director GIHN, said.

If you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, it’s not too late. Many local pharmacies and clinics are still offering vaccinations, and some don’t require an appointment. The most vulnerable tend to be older adults, especially those 65 and up, young children, families with a pregnant member, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

“Typically, you’re going to have some upper respiratory symptoms, nasal congestion, earaches, sore throat, headaches, and slight fevers. Other strains can cause lower GI issues like upset stomachs, or you may have some nausea.” Kevin D. Frank, M.D, FAAFP said. “There’s a number of reasons to get a flu vaccine. There are certainly high-risk patients, but even for those of us who are healthier, the vaccines help to protect our community members.”
