Helen Purcell Turns 140

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – A local assisted living facility is celebrating 140 years of providing care to its local residents.
The Helen Purcell Home Director of Admissions and Activities Ann Combs talked about the legacy of care the nonprofit has earned during its 140 years of operation.
“We are so excited to be able to celebrate a hundred and forty years,” Combs said. “We’ve been here in Muskingum County since Helen Purcell decided to set her mission forth. To have a place for women to be able to be cared for in their later days, as we say. And we’ve been able to take that and expand and add gentlemen and know that we’re so excited to be able to continue her legacy.”
The residential care facility began on Woodlawn Avenue in the historic Putnam neighborhood in 1885 before moving to their current location on Norwood Boulevard in 1937.
“The way the industry has changed over a hundred and forty years is amazing,” Combs said. “We were looking for a place back then where just women came, we now have men. We’ve now seen the industry change as the need for memory care. And that is something we’ve really expanded into here at Helen Purcell, yet still being able to provide independent care.”
The Helen Purcell Home will be holding an open house event from 1-to-3, this Friday to celebrate the anniversary and offer tours through their facility.
