Paddling for Heroes

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Many people participate on Veterans Day as spectators but one organization engages by taking action.
The Paddle For Heroes crew faced a frigid headwind today while paddling the Muskingum River from the Zanesville Yacht Club to Putnam Landing in honor of those who have gone above and beyond in the service of our country.
“As part of this event today we are taking a moment of silence here at the Eternal Flame Monument, and we did that last year as well,” Paddle For Heroes Vice President Joey Butts said while visiting Zane’s Landing Park.
Paddle For Heroes is a Mount Vernon, Ohio based nonprofit that helps veterans and first responders who have experienced traumatic events reconcile by sharing harmonizing moments of paddling along gentle currents of water.
“We want to show our support of course, for our veterans and our first responders. And also we want to do this to encourage others to come out as well. We want to get as many veterans and first responders out here with us and experience the healing experience that we all get from being out here on the water. So we like to think of our group as like a second family,” Butts said.
The expedition also made a stop at Riverside Park and experienced a trip through the Zanesville locks before enjoying a hot lunch that was footed by Brannon Contracting at the veteran owned Muddy Misers.
