State grant helps Perry County children realize importance of reading

CROOKSVILLE, Ohio – A state grant has helped the Perry County District Library teach the importance of reading to children.
Crooksville was one of just 12 districts to receive a grant of $50,000 from the Ohio Department of Education. With that money they are able to put on events like Saturday’s “Stop, Drop, and Read,†which Perry County District Library Director Melissa Marolt said helps teach kids the importance of reading in a fun way.
“The kids were able to walk in and visit the different tables and at each table there’s a literacy enrichment activity plus information for parents and caregivers about what the agency does and how they can serve that family. I think we’ve had a great turnout. We are giving away wonderful books for each child,†said Marolt.
Hundreds of children at Crooksville High School also received snacks, mittens and hats, and a ticket for the Ceramic basketball game. Marlot said they have another event coming up next month too to promote literacy.
“We’re hoping families will come out once again for a day of fun activities and literacy enrichment. Everyone will receive books once again. This time they’ll receive Eric Carle’s “Very Hungry Caterpillar,†said Marolt.
That event is Feb. 26 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Maple Avenue Christian Church.
