NEWARK, Ohio – Students are preparing for college at younger and younger ages. One Licking County program is trying to make sure that they are properly prepared for life after high school.

Through the Work’s ‘Kids Tech University Program,’ About 50 students ages 9-12 got to go to Ohio State Newark for hands on learning about science and engineering. Rori Leath with the Works in Newark said the kids appreciate spending time on a real college campus.

“The overall goal is getting students asking ‘how’ or ‘why’ questions about science and engaging with scientists. It’s real science and real scientist that are engaging them on a real college campus,” said Leath.

OSU Newark Associate Dean Virginia Cope said it’s never too early to prepare for college and that the students weren’t the only ones learning.

“While the students are here learning about science and engineering their parents are meeting with some folks to learn about how to get their kids ready for college. They are learning about the process of admissions. What kind of classes their kids should be taking in middle and high school and how to handle it financially,” said Cope.

The next session will be at Denison University on Feb. 11 with the topic of ‘Why do volcanoes erupt?’
