Local WWII vet celebrates 90 years

2017.02.21 Birthday Duke And His Lady

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- One local World War II veteran celebrated his 90th birthday Tuesday night.

Throughout his many years, Duke Farabee served in both the Army and Navy. Duke assisted in the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

However, one of his favorite stories from his years of service was a lighthearted one.

“We were on the beach, stranded on the beach, the tide went out and my coxswain was a highway patrol man. And he told us, he said if you hear anything in the jungle, be sure and open fire. So we heard something and waited, and waited, and waited, so he said go ahead, so I opened fire and a horse came out and fell over,” said Duke.

“So that made me a hero,” he said full of laughter.

Duke was born and raised in Newark. He has seven children and was married for 58 years when his wife passed away in 2001.

Now, Duke enjoys passing his time singing karaoke and dancing the night away with his dance partner Marge, who he’s been in the company of for 16 years.

“I just love people, and I like to dance and sing,” said Duke. “I’ve been having a real good time, it’s been a wonderful life.”

Duke shared some special advice for those who wish to make it to 90 years.

“Just keep moving; it takes a long time for the devil to catch up with you if you’re moving,” he said.

You can find Duke every Tuesday night at Terry’s Tavern for Karaoke.

“I just love life, and I love people, and I think that’s what makes you  happy the more friends you got, the more time you spend with them; it’s wonderful.”
