City says work continues on pothole problem

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- If there’s one thing the community has in common it’s a pet peeve for pesky potholes.
The City of Zanesville Street Department said they’re continuing their work on potholes throughout the area. Street Foreman, Mike West, said they divide the city into six wards and cover the potholes street by street. He said they usually have three crews working on the six wards.
“Basically we’re just out filling in the potholes. It’s a temporary patch, its not a permanent patch,” said West. “In the winter time they don’t make [the] hot mix so we switch to the cold mix to patch the holes.”
The temporary solution, nicknamed ‘cold mix,’ does not require heat to be applied. It is a gravel and tar mixture that fills the hole until crews are able to use a hot asphalt repair during the warmer months.
West said they also have a process for community complaints.
“If the residents see a pothole they can call here at the street division, we’ll write up an order for it, and we’ll get to it in an orderly fashion,” said West. “Right now we’re pretty much caught up on our list, on our call ins, troubled areas, but more is coming in daily.”
West asks the community to be safe and courteous when driving on the roads. When passing working crews he asks drivers to give them plenty of room.
