ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Kidzville is officially closed and within the next two days the deconstruction will start.

Habitat for Humanity of Southeast Ohio’s Zanesville ReStore is running the deconstruction of Kidzville. Habitat for Humanity of Southeastern Ohio’s Community Engagement Director Murphie Rambo explained the deconstruction will take about one week and they’ll have around 20 volunteers each day.

“The [Habitat for Humanity ReStore] takes any type of salvageable building material,” Rambo said. “So we’re hoping to save a lot of the pieces from Kidzville to be able to put back into the community in other ways. (EDIT) We’re hoping that the rain will hold off for us, tomorrow is looking a little hard on rain. So we’re hoping if tomorrow doesn’t workout, that Wednesday will be our first day of deconstruction.”

Rambo said this fall Habitat for Humanity in Southeast Ohio will be building two houses and restored materials helps with future projects.

“When the [City of Zanesville] came to us and said they were looking at taking Kidzville apart, we wanted to step in and do our part with the ReStore,” Rambo said. “To be able to salvage the material so that it can go right back into the community the same way we are trying to build two houses and put families back into the community.”

Assistant Fire Chief Doug Hobson volunteered his time to become the community organizer for Kidzville. A new structure will be built in the location of the original structure and Hobson is in need for construction volunteers from May 31st until June 5th.

“Anybody can partake in this,” Hobson said. “This is going to be a Zanesville community wide project that we’re excited for anybody to come down. If you can’t come out, if you can’t work with us on one of those lovely days here at Riverside Park. Feel free to make a donation also to the City of Zanesville in care of Kidzville.”

Hobson said they’ll also have fun activities for the children of volunteers.

“A representative from North Terrace Church is my child care representative,” Hobson said. “They’ll be down here doing arts and crafts for the kids. We’ll have snacks, we’ll have food, so anybody can come out and volunteer.”

For anyone interested in volunteering their time or wanting to donate can call the Mayor’s Office at (740) 455-0601 extension 128 or contact Terri Heron by emailing manager@secrestonline.com.
