Asthma Care at Rambo

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America has declared the month of May to be Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month.

To bring awareness to Muskingum County the Rambo Memorial Health Center is holding an open house and offering doctors appointments to test for asthma in children. Medical Director for Pediatric Asthma Dr. Gerald Tiberio said they’ll educate each person on what causes asthma and how to control it.

“What we try to tell them is that asthma does not have a cure, but we have medications that can help control asthma,” Dr. Tiberio said. “I think that the best way to help a child is to educate the mother and educate the family about the characteristics of asthma.”

Controller Medication and Rescue Medication according to Doctor Tiberio are two types of medication that asthma patients can use. Controller Medication helps in the long-term practice of controlling a person’s asthma. Where as Rescue Medication is for short-term control and relief.

The Rambo Memorial Health Center is holding an open house so they can provide anyone affected by asthma with knowledge to control the symptoms.

“We will have a pharmacist available to answer questions about medications,” Registered Nurse Chris Drake said. “We’ll have nurses available to do pulmonary function testing, blood pressure checks, and pulse oximetry checks. Nurses will have information on spacers and inhalers and there will be some fun games to play with prizes to be won.”

The open house will be from 9:00 A.M. to noon on May 6, 2017 located on Main street in Downtown Zanesville.

Dr. Tiberio is now taking appointments for Tuesday mornings and he’ll work closely with the child’s pediatrician to help that child handle their asthma.

“Every child should have their own primary care doctor,” Dr. Tiberio said. “So that I don’t plan to replace or become their primary care doctor. I would rather facilitate communication between their primary care doctor and what we do here so that we improve asthma symptoms and issues.”

“We want to keep children in school, out of the emergency room, and we want them to live their life to the fullest without asthma holding them back from doing so,” said Drake.
