Twin City Opera House celebrates 125 years in operation

MCCONNELSVILLE, Ohio- One Morgan County village is celebrating the history of their iconic landmark structure.
The Twin City Opera House opened to the public in 1892 and is now celebrating its 125th year of operation in the community.
The structure was the first building in Morgan County to be lit by electric lights, and has served many purposes over the past century.
“It’s been the center of arts and culture and government and education throughout it’s history. There have been plays here, schools graduations here. Its an important piece of this community and the people have always rallied around it and come out to support it when times got tough,” said Rick Shriver,
president of the board of trustees for Opera House Inc.
Shriver said that the one key factor that sets this opera house aside from other similar structures throughout the state is it’s continuous operation; only having shut down for just one month in the 1930’s.
“Its longevity I think in the state is truly important. We can look all around and see examples of facilities like this that were torn down for whatever reason. And, so I think its a huge testament to our community, that this one has continued to remain open for as long as it has,” said Adam Shriver, executive director of the Twin City Opera House.
The structure was designed by Zanesville architect HC Lindsay in the 1800’s. Currently, you can enjoy live performances, a film or two, or a paranormal encounter as the theater is rumored to be haunted.
For the 125th anniversary, they will be featuring monthly events such as the Ohio Valley Opry, Southeastern Ohio Symphony string quartet and a film festival. For a full list of events, visit their website at www.operahouseinc.com.
