Colt Gets the Call: John Glenn Alum Emerson to Make MLB Debut

I

SEATTLE, WA – When John Glenn High School’s own Colt Emerson was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 2023 Major League Baseball draft, the expectations were sky high for the reigning Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior.

Emerson has since exceeded expectations, soaring through the Mariners’ minor league system in less than three years, and is now set to make his major league debut. Seattle is calling up the number six ranked prospect in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline. Colt has already had an eventful spring after making MLB history with an eight-year, $95 million contract extension back on April 1st, becoming the highest paid player yet to make his first major league appearance.

The Mariners’ top brass believes that the former first round pick is ready for the bright lights of the major leagues. “This is not a 15 at-bat or a 20 at-bat tryout to see if he’s capable of taking the job and running with it for the rest of the year. I have zero concerns that he’s emotionally ready” says general manager Justin Hollander. Hollander himself is an Ohio native from Dayton, and an Ohio State University graduate of 2001.

The 2023 Muskies graduate played 38 games for Triple A-Tacoma in the Mariners system this season with a .255 batting average while swatting seven home runs and collecting 26 runs batted in. Emerson has also been known to flash the leather, whether playing at his natural position of shortstop, or oftentimes at third base, where he finds himself for his debut on Sunday night.

Emerson will make his debut batting ninth in the Mariners’ order against the San Diego Padres. First pitch is set for 7:20 pm on WHIZ-TV.
