Zanesville OSHP Provides Memorial Day Travel Safety Tips

ZANESVILLE, OH – Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to make safety a priority before hitting the road.
The Zanesville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is sharing Memorial Day travel safety tips ahead of the holiday weekend. Troopers are encouraging drivers to buckle up, avoid distractions, slow down, and never drive impaired. Drivers should also remember to move over for stopped emergency vehicles.
“Be aware of the construction zones throughout the state. There are over 1,000 active construction zones with projects going on. So, if you see those just be patient. Being patient can save a life. Remember the Ohio law, move over and slow down. If you see flashing lights, move over and slow down. That can save a life as well. The more important thing, remember what Memorial Day is for. It’s to honor those who sacrificed for our country. So, we want everybody to get to and from their destinations safely.” Zanesville OSHP Post Commander, Lt. Brian Hawkins said.
During the 2025 Memorial Day Weekend, there were 13 fatal crashes across Ohio that resulted in 14 deaths. Troopers say alcohol and drugs continue to play a major role in serious crashes. Of those 13 fatal crashes, 9 crashes and 10 deaths involved alcohol or drugs.
“Make sure you don’t use alcohol and drugs, so you don’t crash.” Lt. Hawkins said. “Be prepared. Be responsible. And have a plan for a sober driver.”
