Lakewood’s new turf field and stadium takes shape

Lakewood

HEBRON, Ohio – Lakewood High School joins the growing list of schools saying goodbye to the grass athletic field.

Construction is wrapping up on the Licking County school’s brand new stadium equipped with a new turf field and eight-lane track. Calhoun Memorial Field will serve as the home of the Lancers’ football, soccer, and track teams. Athletic Director Bo Hanson said this has been something he’s dreamed of for a while.

“Sometimes I pinch myself to make sure this is really happening. This is a fantastic facility. It’s going to be a great foot print for this corner. And it’s really going to bring our district to the forefront,” Hanson said.

It’s more than just a new field at Lakewood, too. Grandstands on each side of the field are being installed. The home side will be equipped with a new press box and have seating for 1,250 fans. The visiting side will seat 500 spectators. New concession stands and bathrooms are being built. As is a wall that will honor stadium donors and those from the Lakewood school district who have served in the military.

Hanson said the players are excited to get on the new field and that it will improve more than just the aesthetics of the school.

“Having a home soccer match was a big detriment to our kids because once the ball got outside of the numbers, with the crown that was on our field, it was pretty much out of play. I thought that was a home field advantage for us, but it was really a disadvantage for all 22 guys or girls on the field,” Hanson said.

The Lancer football team will be the first to christen the field when they play Amanda Clearcreek at home week one. That game is August 25.
