Solar Eclipse Safety Tips and Project

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – As the Solar Eclipse is less than a week away, it’s time to prepare and read up on safety tips.
The Zanesville Astronomy Club is giving away free solar eclipse viewing glasses. Coordinator Irene Baron said many glasses are being given away or sold, but not all of the glasses will protect your eyes.
“On the inside of these they will say how they are certified,” Baron said. “Evidently there is counterfeit [glasses]. Which you have to be careful if they’re not certified they could blind you, because they’re not the correct material. These are certified both in the United Kingdom and the united states.”
According to Baron the glasses that are certified will be labeled I.S.O. with a number provide. Scientists have made the solar eclipse an event all can watch and participate in through uploading pictures and videos on to an Eclipse Megamovie 2017 website.
“They say do not take a picture of the sun with your [mobile phone] as this beginning or ending, because it will burn the phone,” Baron said. “The people who are in the [Eclipse Megamovie 2017] they request you have a 300 zoom camera minimum to be a part of the [Eclipse Megamovie 2017] project.
