Muskingum to open season with Waynesburg Saturday

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – For the sixth year in a row Muskingum University will open the football season with Waynesburg. This year the Muskies get the Yellow Jackets on their home turf and they’re hoping it’s not as close as the 2016 game.
The Muskies opened last year with a 17-16 win over Waynesburg. A last minute field attempt by Waynesburg hit off the upright and gave the Muskies the win.
Head coach Al Logan knows what Waynesburg brings to the table each year.
“Those guys (Waynesburg) are always big and physical. They’re Pennsylvania kids, coal mining kids, blue collar. They come in here and they’re always a physical team,” said Logan.
The Muskies went on to finish last year with a record of 4-6. Waynesburg ended the year with a record of 2-8 .
Waynesburg brings back 16 seniors. They also return sophomore quarterback Tyler Perone who played in seven games last year as a freshman as the Yellow Jacket’s gunslinger.
“They’re not complex in what they do. They’re going to line up every play and try to smack you in the mouth. So we’ve got to be physical with them,” said Logan.
The Muskies and Waynesburg first played in 1904 and they’ve played 18 times in team history. The boys from Pennsylvania hold the series advantage 8-10.
Kickoff from McConagha Stadium is 1 p.m.
