ZANESVILLE — Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Zanesville earlier today as the community came together for its annual Veterans Day Parade, honoring the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Hundreds of vehicles made their way through the streets, ranging from large floats to small cars. Local bands, dance teams, cheer groups, veterans’ organizations and businesses also took part, all sharing one common purpose: celebrating and recognizing local veterans.

Brent Mirgon, chairman of the Rotary Veterans Day Parade, said the event provides an opportunity for the community to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served.

“I think it’s just important to recognize, you know, what’s happened in the past. Those that have served in our service,” Mirgon said. “It’s just a way to give back, to show what this day means.”

Mirgon also praised the creativity and support shown by the community, noting the participation of three bands, numerous veterans organizations and local businesses.

While Halloween has passed, younger paradegoers still got to enjoy a familiar parade tradition. Participants tossed candy from their floats, giving children along the route another reason to celebrate.

American flags and signs could be seen throughout the crowd as families and community members gathered to show their appreciation for those who have protected the country.

Leland R. Biles, grand marshal of the parade, said the event reflects the community’s appreciation for veterans and the freedoms their service has helped protect.

“I’m so thankful for every veteran who served to keep us safe,” Biles said. “That’s a true indication of the love that the people of this community have for America, and for their veterans and those who have served.”

Biles also shared how meaningful the parade was for his family, saying he was especially grateful to have his great-grandchildren attending and celebrating alongside him.

The Veterans Day Parade is a tradition spanning more than 100 years, continuing to bring the community together year after year to honor those who have served and recognize their sacrifices.
