National Stop The Bleed Day 2018

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- In honor of National Stop The Bleed Day, hospitals across the country are teaching communities how to help save lives.
Saurday, members of the community as well as community leaders gathered at Genesis HealthPlex to attend a training where they learned how to stop the bleeding from traumatic events.
“National Stop The Bleed Day is the community initiative to teach the public about saving lives. Today we have instructors who are trained to teach the course and basically we give a quick educational lectures then we actually will do hands on teaching on how to do compression to stop bleeding and tourniquet placement,” said Dr. Stuart Chow, Medical Director, Genesis Trauma Services.
With bleeding serving as a major cause of death worldwide, Dr. Brandice Alexander said more lives could be saved if people were trained on how to respond to trauma.
“We’ve identified throughout the country that bleeding is a major reason why people die and it can be preventable with these simple techniques that we’re teaching to the public. Unfortunately, with the violence that’s going around our country we need to be prepared. I’m a trauma surgeon, I love operating on patients but I need for the patients to get to get to our hospital for us to work on them,” said Genesis Trauma Surgeon, Dr. Brandice Alexander.
Throughout the day Genesis held three classes with 125 participants in each. Following the training, each participant received a certificate of completion, as well as a take home tourniquet kit.
