Bicycle safety for Summer

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- May is National Bike Month and many cyclists are taking advantage of the warm weather.

With more bicyclists out on the road, its important for both motorists and cyclists alike to pay attention to each other. In 2016 bicycle accidents reached an all-time high and AAA spokesperson Kimberly Schwind says it’s important for both motorists and cyclists to practice safety.

“There’s a few things that motorist really need to be aware that in Ohio bicycles are considered vehicles,” said Schwind. “They do have the same rights to the road as cars do so you really want to pay attention and give them plenty of space. For cyclists, it’s really important that you stay visible and predictable.”

Schwind also said it’s important for cyclists to use signals and avoid weaving in and out of cars. If riding at night, make sure to have reflectors or lights on the bike, and most importantly wear a helmet at all times.

“Head injuries are the number one cause of bicycle-related fatalities and a helmet can really protect your head, you want to make sure the helmet is fitting properly,” said Schwind. “This goes for our youngest riders as soon as kids feet hit the peddles for the first time you want to make sure they are wearing a bicycle helmet. It’s just really important for safety and can save lives.”

AAA has just started offering a Bicycle Breakdown Service as well. Members who experience a bicycle breakdown can call AAA and a service truck will pick them up and take them and their bike where they need to go.
