Walking For PSP
Rain or shine she walks to raise awareness for a disease that is killing her mother.
Only 20,000 people nationwide are diagnosed with the very rare brain disease PSP. So, Sandy McWilliams decided to do something about it. “My mother has a fatal brain disease Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and its rare and not heard of by a lot of folks and I wanted to increase peoples awareness of this disease so I thought one way to do that was to walk from my house to her house, so that’s what I’m doing, I’m walking from Louisville, Kentucky to Pennsville, New Jersey.”
McWilliams decided a year ago she wanted to do the walk and for the past six months she has been training. With the support of her family and friends she started walking on June 8th and plans to make it to her mom’s house by July 25th. “Its a movement disorder, people have difficulty to be able to walk, talk and swallow so I thought since its difficult moving that would be one way to increase awareness, was to be walking.”
McWilliams covers about 20 miles a day and the trip will take her through seven states in the 700 mile effort to raise awareness for the deadly disease.
