Patriotism Today in America
People celebrate the Fourth of July with the many festivities we have mentioned…parades, cookouts, fireworks.
However, do we really recognize this holiday for what it stands for, our independence as a nation? President of the Muskingum County Veterans Council, Bud Johnson, says most people don’t.
“It’s just a holiday. They recognize fireworks and cookouts, ” says Johnson.
Johnson says he is certain of one thing though; patriotism is not dead among veterans.
“Every generation, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and now this O.I.F. You look at the kids. Each kid has decided that’s what they want to do. They do it for the honor of their country and to protect the flag that they live under, ” says Johnson.
It is their sacrifices that have allowed us to live the way we do today.
“It gives us freedom of choice, freedom to do anything. “
Johnson says it is important, on this holiday, not to forget and not to take for granted what our country stands for.
