Dec. 22 Named After 12-Year Old Girl

It’s not every day a twelve year old has a day named after her.

Westerville 7th grader Katie Cavanaugh is one of the lucky few.

Her efforts to help ZPD K9 Officer Bosco by raising money to pay for his injuries caused Mayor Zwelling to proclaim December 22 Katie Cavanaugh Day.

"She wore her family out, they all helped her," said Mayor Zwelling. "She’s got her brothers and sisters, father and grandparents here. They’re very supportive of her. I’m proud to proclaim this day for the City of Zanesville Katie Cavanaugh Day."

"You do this stuff and you don’t expect anything in return," said Cavanaugh. "It’s just amazing. I never thought I’d have my own day."

Katie raised about $4,700 dollars to help pay for Bosco’s medical expenses.

She is also using Bosco as inspiration for a school project that will allow police canines to wear their bullet-proof vests at all times.

"I’m trying to come up with a way that can make the vest cooler so they can wear it all the time," she said. "If something like this happens, they can be  lot safer."

With the help of her family members, Katie raised the money for Bosco by hosting bake sales and selling food at a Columbus Crew game.
